The 3D Retail Coalition (3DRC), a consortium of over 200 global brands and retailers dedicated to advancing 3D in fashion, has begun work with ASTM International to help create the industry’s first empirical testing standard for digital fabric drape validation, in an effort to increase digital confidence.
The new standard, “Standard Test Method for 3D Fabric Physics Drape Validation (Comparison of Digital Fabric to Physical Fabric),” will provide a scientifically grounded method to validate that digital fabrics behave like their physical counterparts. This milestone aims to accelerate adoption of digital fabrics, which are foundational for creating accurate digital twins of garments.
To drive this work, ASTM has established a new subcommittee, D13.67: 3D Digital Fabrics, under its textiles committee. The working group is led by Michelle Greenhouse, Chair of the 3DRC Innovation Committee, who will guide the process alongside ASTM experts and member organizations.
“By establishing a data-driven standard, we can build confidence in digital fabrics across the apparel value chain,” said Greenhouse. “This will not only strengthen trust in digital technologies but also create the foundation for scalable, reliable, and sustainable digital transformation.”
The 3DRC’s role is to bring industry insight and expertise into the process, ensuring the standard reflects real-world needs. The development period is expected to take 12–18 months, including collaborative testing and review.
